I find it so astonishing how poorly a lot of politicians handle negative whatever in the press. You have to just get it all out there. You have to be totally, uncomfortably honest.
You pretty much have to be prepared to talk about whatever the news is. Running for Congress was good practice for that.
Being a host or a guest or a pundit, you really want to say something that’s interesting and potentially provocative, that’s going to stick with people. The last thing you want to say when you’re a politician is something provocative.
I’ve lived in the state almost my entire life, so I think if I ever wanted to come back and serve in Virginia, it would be pretty hard to paint me as a carpetbagger.
In politics, you’re safest when you’re saying as little as possible. You’re safest when you’ve got your talking points and you stick to them like glue, even if it means repeating yourself over and over.
I haven’t ruled out another run for office at some point.
